The Early Girl

By Caroline Kava

“Usually nobody shows up. So it’s just a waste of time. But then one day… Somebody does… Someone she thought she’d never hear from again… A person called Joan… Just a regular person,.. But someone who could matter,.. Who might make a difference,.. Who just may have the nerve to show up for herself..”

The Early Girl by Caroline Kava is a play that illustrates the life of six women who work in a brothel in the early 1980s. It is a rapid witty account of how these women deal with the weight of societal standards and how it affects their close relationships with each other. Though The Early Girl is a comedic play, it grapples with discussions on the fetishization of youthful and innocent women, conflicts women experience when striving to achieve the male gaze, and, finally, what it is to be in a sisterhood.

“This movie was brave. It’s the kind of story everyone’s clamoring for right now.”

Following the aftermath of the #MeToo Movement that emerged in Hollywood in 2017, ART explores how this change affects a very specific director and the actress for his upcoming film.
